Nokia denies plans to re-enter the consumer smartphone market

Nokia has just published a statement on its official company website claiming that it has "no intention to manufacture or sell consumer handsets". Furthermore, the company also deemed as false recent reports that quoted a Nokia executive as confirming the company's ambitions to manufacture smartphones out of an R&D facility in China.

Earlier this week, a couple of reports suggested that Nokia is staging a comeback to the smartphone market. The initial report, published on Monday by ReCode, quoted sources familiar to Nokia's plans according to which the company is planning a return to the smartphone market in 2016. A few days later, a Chinese newspaper quoted Mike Wang, the President of Nokia China, communicating an intention to to manufacture smartphones in the Chinese city of Sichuan.

Nokia's recent statement doesn't specifically make any mention to plans of designing smartphones in the near future. The statement only mentions that the company has no plans to sell or manufacture consumer handsets, and this specificity leaves room for interpretation. ReCode originally reported that Nokia will licence smartphone designs to third party manufacturers, which is exactly what the company did with the Nokia N1 tablet, a device designed by Nokia, but manufactured and commercialized by Foxconn.

Nokia is bound by its deal with Microsoft not to release any Nokia-branded smartphones until the third quarter of 2016. We're keeping an eye on the situation and we'll get back to you as soon as there's more to report.

We’re now working on version 2, which is in preparation.”
It was also announced that the partnership between the two companies is going ahead. For those who aren’t in the know, Luxottica entered into a deal with Google last year to design and market fashionable Glass devices

Lenovo A5000 quietly makes its way to India for 10,250 INR (~$162)

The competition in the sub-$160 smartphone is really intense and hot. Lenovo is one of the companies aiming to gain ground in that segment, launch a host of models there. Xiaomi Mi 4i goes official with 5" 1080p screen, 13MP camera

Just moments Xiaomi's latest handset was made official at a dedicated event in New Delhi. Just as expected, the Xperia Mi 4i is a more-affordable alternative to the Xiaomi Mi 4 and comes with a polycarbonate unibody.

The Snapdragon 801 has been swapped with a Snapdragon 615, which is less powerful, but does offer an important upgrade over the aforementioned chip - it is 64-bit. The SoC in question is octa-core with Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.7 GHz and the other four at 1.1 GHz. The device is equipped with 2GB of RAM an onboard storage is 16GB. Graphics are courtesy of the Adreno 405.

The smartphone is built around a 5.0" Full HD OGS IPS display with a density of 441 ppi. The panel comes with adaptive brightness technology, called Sunlight display, which improves its legibility when outdoors. Sony have been using such a technique for quite some time and it essentially boils down to brightening darker areas under direct light.

The camera setup is also changed and the Mi 4i now offers 13MP F/2.0 main snapper and a 5MP F/1.8 front-facer. The main camera packs a dual tone dual LED flash for better white balance in low light shots. There are a lot of changes on the software side as well and not just the camera app. Beautify and HDR have received a major overhaul. Low-light quality is improved and the new image filters now come with an array of clever algorithms that are custom-tailored for the best possible results on facial features, based on an estimation of your age and sex.

In terms of connectivity the Xiaomi Mi 4i offers dual-SIM slots with 4G support on both of them. There's also dual-band MU-MIMO Wi-Fi a/b/g/n/ac support - ensuring the fastest local transfer speeds around. Bluetooth version is 4.1, while the microUSB 2.0 port supports USB host mode.
The Xiaomi Mi 4i is powered by a 3,120 mAh battery. It will be available in a total of five color choices - white, blue, orange, yellow and pink. It exact dimensions are 138.1 mm x 69.6 mm x 7.8 mm, and weighs in at 130 g, making it smaller and lighter than the Mi 4.

On the software side, we find Xiaomi's own MIUI 6. It is based on Android 5.0 Lollipop so you get a really up-to-date experience. Xiaomi has also developed a few interesting new features, like IVR (Interactive Voice Recognition), to simplify annoying service line calls.

The most impressive bit about the Xiaomi Mi 4i however is its pricing. The smartphone will cost $205 (INR 12,999) when it launches on April 30 on Flipkart. Registrations start today at 8PM IST. Unfortunately we didn't get anything on international availability.

Facebook launches Hello, a new dialer and contacts app for Android

Facebook Home may not have been a success at all, but the social network isn’t ready to give up on the idea of replacing built-in functionality on Android with its own apps. Case in point – today Facebook has launched a new app called Hello. This is basically an alternative dialer app for Android, and it’s already up for grabs in the Google Play Store (though it seems to be geo-restricted, so you may not be able to download it depending on where you are).

Hello combines a dialer with an interface for viewing contacts, along with easy call blocking and seamless search for people and places. The search part feels especially well tailored for queries relating to businesses. You just need to type a few letters of the name, and if that business has a Facebook page you’ll then be able to call it with one tap (if it has a phone number listed on Facebook itself, of course).

The same process also works for people, as you’d expect. You can message contacts using Facebook Messenger, and even call them via VoIP using Messenger’s dedicated feature. But the main thing Hello does is take over when a call comes in, which is where it shows you information about people even if you don’t have them in your contact list. This is obviously powered by Facebook’s vast database of people and phone numbers. The photo that shows up is the person’s Facebook profile picture, and some additional details are shown on the call screen too – for example, if it’s someone’s birthday.

Hello offers to automatically block numbers that have been blocked by a lot of other people, but you can also manually block any number in a very simple way. Since the app ties into Facebook, contact information such as profile pictures and birthdays always stay up to date. And like with the dialer and contacts apps built into Android, Hello lets you add and edit contacts too.

This Android 6.0 Muffin video concept calls for a Multi-Window feature, more Material Design goodness

Android 1.0 Alpha, Android 2.0 Beta, Android 1.5 Cupcake, Android 1.6 Donut... all the way to Android 4.4 KitKat and Android 5.0 Lollipop. Notice a relationship? That's right, not only is Google always using the names of sweets for its major Android updates, but it has, so far without a fault, followed an alphabetical order for those name. So after KitKat came Lollipop, and after Lollipop we're guaranteed to have something starting with an M.

Like Muffin. That, at least, is one possibility, and it certainly sounds widely-appreciated enough to appeal to Google. A concept video, designed by Vladislav Vitula, gives us a look into what the author thinks Android 6.0 Muffin should feel like, and even dreams up new features: Multi-Window and Quick Reply.
In case you're unfamiliar with what Multi-Window is, it's a feature available on some Samsung and LG devices, and it basically allows you to run two apps side-by-side and simultaneously. As you can imagine, it has the potential to help multitasking, and is a welcome addition to devices with large enough displays (i.e. phablets) to comfortably visualize two apps at once. As for Quick Reply, that would simply let you answer incoming notifications right from a notification that appears in the status bar. Overall, the designer's love for Google's Material Design is quite obvious, as his conception has a ton animation-rich transitions at its core, and we found that we don't really mind!

Motorola begins testing Android 5.1 Lollipop for first-gen Moto X

The original Motorola Moto X, released in 2013, has been in disadvantage since the official Lollipop release. Due to the custom chipset the Android updates need further tweaking before their rollout and first-gen Moto X was always the last of the Moto lineup on the update queue.
The Moto X (2013) got its official Android 5.0 Lollipop update just a month ago after a few delays and soak tests. Today, a new soak test begins in Brazil and this time around it's for the latest Android 5.1 Lollipop OS.

The 5.1 version of Android is already available on the Moto X(2014) and it brings both usability and stability improvements. It enhances the quick settings, gives better control over notifications and interrupts, improves the performance of the camera and Android system, plus it contains lots of bug fixes.
A similar update is now rolling out in Brazil for the first generation Moto X. If all goes smooth it should roll out worldwide in May. Motorola is dedicated to providing regular updates for the Moto X (2013) until the end of 2015, so more Android updates will be following later this year for sure.

Samsung's Galaxy Tab A series lands in the US on May 1

Samsung will release the two Galaxy Tab A tablets in the US market on May 1. Both the Galaxy Tab A 9.7 and the Galaxy Tab A 8.0 were first introduced at an event in Russia last month, and since then we've heard that at least one of them is headed to Germany in May.

And now the US officially joins the list of countries in which they will be available. Both tablets are supposed to go up for pre-order at Samsung's online store and major retailers later today.
As for pricing, if you're interested in the smaller Galaxy Tab A 8.0 you'll have to shell out $229.99, while the bigger Tab A 9.7 will set you back $299.99. As you may have gathered, the former comes with an 8-inch touchscreen, while the latter has a 9.7-inch display.
Both tablets will be available in white, Smoky Titanium, and Smoky Blue. A special edition 9.7-inch Galaxy Tab A in Smoky Titanium will be bundled with an S Pen stylus for $349.99, and this will be out on May 17.
The prices are affordable because on the inside these are midrange tablets at best. Their distinctive feature is the 4:3 aspect ratio used by their displays.
Both have the same 1,024x768 resolution, and and they both sport a 1.2 GHz quad-core processor, 1.5GB of RAM, a 5 MP rear camera and a 2 MP selfie unit, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, GPS, and they run Android 5.0 Lollipop. The Tab A 8.0 has a 4,200 mAh battery, while the 9.7-incher comes with a 6,000 mAh cell.

Nokia rumored to return to making phones next year!

According to a report in Re/code, Nokia plans to go back to manufacturing mobile phone in 2016. The company is said to be “quietly plotting a return” to the market it once dominated.

Nokia Technologies is reportedly driving the move back to mobile phones. The division is in charge of managing Nokia’s large portfolio of over 10,000 patents - it released the N1 Android tablet in China earlier this year, as well as the Z Launcher for Android.

The Finnish manufacturer will follow a similar approach to the phone market as it did with the N1 tablet. It will design the devices, but let another company handle their manufacturing and marketing.
Nokia recently acquired the networking equipment manufacturer Alcatel-Lucent. The company is also said to be contemplating a sale of its HERE maps division.

Codename H3Y, aka Xiaomi Redmi Note 2 could have USB Type-C, MT6795

The Redmi series makes for some of the most popular Xiaomi products in and outside of China. Currently, the series is headed by the Redmi 2 and the Redmi Note, and a successor to the latter is due since a while.
From what it appears right now, Xiaomi is well aware of that and is currently prepping a successor aka the Redmi Note 2. The device — allegedly codenamed Xiaomi H3Y — will allegedly mark the return of MediaTek chipsets on Xiaomi phones, something that the company has shied away from after a fiasco.
Also, it looks like the recent MT67xx series of 64-bit SoCs from MediaTek have played a major role in the Taiwan fabricator a hot favourite. Almost all devices we revired that were powered by the MT6732 and MT6752 have received positive feedback!

Coming back to the Redmi Note 2, besides sporting a MediaTek chip — allegedly the MT6795 — the phone will also have a 5.5-inch 1080p display, 13 mega-pixel main camera and an 8 mega-pixel/5 mega-pixel front facer. More interestingly, it’ll be, if the leaks turn out to be true, one of the first phones (after the LeTV series) to sport reversible USB connectors — USB Type-C.
Who’s excited about this one?

10-core Mediatek MT6797 Helio X20 to use 2 Cortex A72 + 8 Cortex A53 Cores

The report states that the Helio X20 chipset will use the powerful yet battery efficient, Cortex A72 cores in combination with the power efficient Cortex A53 cores. There will be 2 x 2.5GHz Cortex A72 cores, 4 x 2.0GHz Cortex A53 cores and 4 x 1.4Ghz Cortex A53 cores. This combination will strike a balance between power and performance. And the above configuration also supports the earlier claim that the chip will score above 70K on AnTuTu.

The chip will increase performance to a great extent. It is said that the MT6797 increases performance up to 40% as compared to the previous generation Helio X10 i.e. MT6795.

Although the information about the cores used in the chip differs when we compare yesterday’s report, the overall technology remains the same. So, it is said that the three different cores will use Mediatek’s home grown special tri-cluster CPU architecture. The 4+4 Cortex A53 cores will use big. LITTLE architecture to balance performance and battery efficiency. Also, like we said yesterday, the chip will come with Turbo boost technology, much like the Turbo in a car wherein it can regulate its own performance and power according to the requirement.

Yesterday’s report said that the chip will use TSMC’s 20nm process and supports LTE-A / Cat. 6 networks. The chip will most likely go into mass production by July this year, so expect devices running the Helio X20 by the end of 2015.
It looks like Mediatek is really stepping up its game with a 10-core Cortex A72 powered chip. However, whether smartphones really need these many cores for performance improvement is something that we will have to wait and watch.

Special Apple Watch Edition for celebrities comes with solid gold band

An Apple Watch Edition model with a solid gold band has been seen adorning the wrist of celebrities like Beyonce and fashionista Karl Lagerfeld. This appears to be a band that only celebrities and other influential people are able to score from Apple. The tech titan considers its smartwatch to be just as much a fashionable piece of jewelry as it is a piece of technology for your wrist.

If Apple does end up offering this gold band to consumers, it will extend the price range of the Apple Watch Edition, which currently ranges from $10,000 to $17,000. The high end model is the Rose Gold version of the timepiece which comes with a red leather band and a gold buckle. But apparently that is too pedestrian a combination for the elite of the elite.

The Apple Watch officially launches this coming Friday and as we get closer to the April 24th launch date, Apple continues to make sure that the wearable is seen on the wrists of celebrities like Drake, Pharrell and Katy Perry. Last Friday, Apple design chief Jony Ive was spotted at an event held in a high-class restaurant in Milan where the merely rich and famous (a tier below celebrity status) received free Apple goodies including an Apple Watch Band offered in exclusive colors. Of course, the band without the watch is useless and some in attendance were given a free Apple Watch.

Sony Xperia Z4 launches with 5.2” FHD display in Japan

After many weeks of rumors and leaks, Sony has formally unveiled its next flagship - Xperia Z4. The new Xperia Z4 is the successor of the Xperia Z3 but has only been announced in Japan market for now.

The Sony Xperia Z4 has a slightly tweaked OmniBalance design with 6.9mm profile with a metal frame running around the sides. Just like the predecessor, the Xperia Z4 brings IP68 certification for dust and water resistance.
The corners are built with resin to provide strength and entire phone has two-layer coating to retain the overall shine.
Sony sticks with 5.2-inch 1080p display and still hasn't succumbed to the QHD wave. Under the hood, it houses a 64-bit octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 chipset armed with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of on-board storage. A microSD card slot will let you expand the storage by up to 128GB. By default, the smartphone runs Android 5.0 Lollipop.

At the back is a 20.7MP camera with Exmor RS image sensor coupled with the BIONZ image processing engine. Clad with G Lens, the 1/2.3-inch image sensor can offer sensitivity all the way up to ISO12800 to capture well exposed images in poorly lit environments. Along with the usual set of HDR and the imaging modes, Sony has added new 'Cooking Mode' for clicking the best images of your food.
Front side 5MP wide-angle camera with Exmor R sensor has been optimized to take selfies along with new shake feature to record videos with reduced shake.
The Xperia Z4 now supports high quality audio performance for wireless playback. Weighing 144 grams, the Xperia Z4 packs a 2,930 mAh non-removable battery. As of now, there is no word on the price and the launch of this flagship in other markets.

LG G4 release date confirmed to be May 31

LG has been sharing teasers of its upcoming flagship G4 set to go official on April 28. While the phone is still under wraps, LG Korea confirmed that the G4 will hit the stores on May 31 or at least in the company's home market.

Earlier today, LG announced it will offer free screen replacement and free 64GB microSD card for all those who pre-order the G4 in Korea. As you might know LG is also running a LG G4 trial program in few countries to let a select group of people try out the phone before it officially launches.
LG G4 is set to arrive with a 5.5” True HD IPS display of QHD resolution and made from Corning Gorilla Glass 4, sporting the Snapdragon 808 chipset, it will pack 3GB of RAM with 32GB on-board storage. The company has been harping about the 16MP rear snapper with f/1.8 aperture for clicking wide-angle images

Is this the first look at a Cheaper OnePlus Model?

Weibo posters are reporting that the above image might be the first look at a new cheaper OnePlus model set for release sometime in the future.
Later today OnePlus will hold an announcement relating to some mystery service or product from the brand. No one is sure what it will be, but there are reports that the company will unveil a low-cost version of their popular OPO.
To partly prove these reports a famous tipster on Weibo has posted a photo of a phone that has the distinct OnePlus look and rumoured to be an entry level phone. In the photo the device has the same metal panel around the main camera and single flash on a white plastic body with power button on the right.
At this point it is hard to tell if this is in fact a budget OnePlus phone or one of the many knock off devices which have been available for the past few months.
If it is a budge OPO then what specifications could it offer? In our opinion OnePlus would likely stick with Qualcomm for a processor and allow for easy development, they could even go for the same 801, but with 2GB RAM instead. The screen could remain 5.5-inch with a HD resolution or possibly a 5-inch FHD. What are your ideas for a possible budget OnePlus device?

OnePlus One now available without invites forever

OnePlus is feeling the excitement of the first anniversary of its One smartphone. On that occasion, the Chinese startup has announced that it will offer the OnePlus One smartphone without invites in all supported regions.

So it took 12 months but the invite-only strategy has finally been canned. Interestingly, that decision comes immediately after the Xiaomi announced open sale for its smartphones in India.
The OnePlus One sales will be opened globally along with 75% discount on Flip Covers and Premium Screen Protectors only for today. Besides that, Bamboo StyleSwap covers will also be made available until the stocks last. Do note that the promotion on accessories are limited only to USA, Canada, European Union, Hong Kong, and Taiwan.

Oppo launches the low-end Joy Plus in India for $111

Oppo has launched a new budget Android smartphone in India. The Oppo Joy Plus will retail for Rs. 6,990 ($111) and is Oppo's cheapest phone on the market.

The Joy Plus has a 4.0-inch, 800x480 display, MediaTek MT6572 SoC with dual-Core 1.3GHz CPU, 1GB RAM, 4GB internal memory, 3 megapixel rear camera, VGA front camera, 1700mAh battery, and Android 4.4 KitKat.
While this may have been fine a couple of years ago, Oppo seems woefully out of touch with the current market situation in India, where you can get the Xiaomi Redmi 2 for the same price as the Joy Plus and is in a different league altogether. If Oppo wants to get a bigger foothold in the market, it will need to be more aggressive with price and specifications in a value conscious market like India.
